getting justice for the people. Shri Anand is a Rajya Sabha Member of Parliament from the State of Jharkhand. As a Rajya Sabha Member, he has undertaken several initiatives for the development of Jharkhand, and to pursue such activities, he visits Jharkhand almost every month. As a Parliamentarian, he has given voice to matters of public interest on a regular basis. He has a multifaceted personality – he is a friendly and amicable person who has special interest in creative and sports-related activities. At the time when the Indian justice system is deeply involved in public welfare issues and finding solutions to such problems, his nomination as a Congress candidate from South Delhi for the upcoming elections is a welcome move. It is clear that the intellectual citizens of South Delhi have found a friend who will not only understand their problems and challenges, but will also fight to resolve them. He has had a long-standing relationship with South Delhi where he has also been the President of the South Extension Resident Welfare Association. Born on March 15th 1943, Shri R. K. Anand has received value education about humanity and society from a very early age. His father (late) Shri. R. L. Anand was a prominent businessman and social worker. Shri R. K. Anand has worked hard to reach the heights of his career today. Starting his career as a medical representative, he completed his education in law while working in the US Embassy. His wife, Smt. Bharti Anand, has been a senior and well-established Public Prosecutor in the High Court. He has two sons and a daughter-in-law, the elder son is a well-known surgeon in London, U.K. and the younger son is pursuing his legal career on the footsteps of his father.

Shri R. K. Anand joined the Indian National Congress as a humble party worker. He was deeply influenced by Mahatma Gandhi and Pandit Nehru at an early age. He was desirous of contributing to the process of nation building. As a result, he has devoted much of his time taking matters for legal resolution which are related to the problems faced by the common man. He has successfully fought several cases of public interest and helped obtain justice in these matters. He has appeared in front of several Commissions appointed by the Government, including those involving two former Prime Ministers - Smt. Indira Gandhi and Shri. Rajiv Gandhi. Today, he serves the interests of justice while working under the leadership of Smt. Sonia Gandhi. He has made special contributions as a committed party worker in the recent campaigning at Himachal Pradesh and Rajasthan election under the directions of the Congress High Command. During this period, he emphasized on the value-based politics practiced by the Congress party, which is driven by secularism, social justice and protection of the common man's interests..

During 30 years of his celebrated career in pursuing the cause of justice, Shri R. K. Anand has been deeply involved and has made lasting contributions in the workings of the Delhi Bar Council, since 1973. In recognition of his efforts, he was elected as the Chairman of the Delhi Bar Council during 1985 and 1994. He has also worked   tirelessly   for the   last 13   years  as  the

elected Vice President of the Indian Law Institute to bring about international recognition and fame. During his tenure as the Vice-President of Indian Law Institute, he has helped to bring about global attention to matters of environment, primary health. He has been especially interested in bringing the fore issues related to child and women welfare. He has regularly initiated debate on matters related to law in both the domestic and international arena. Shri Anand is also a member of the International Bar Association.

As a lawyer, Shri Anand has represented three former Prime Ministers – Smt. Indira Gandhi, Shri Rajiv Gandhi and Shri Narsimha Rao. He was recently in the news again when his arguments in court in the matter of the JMM corruption case led the courts to conclude that former Prime Minister Shri Narsimha Rao was innocent of all charges. His proximity  with the Gandhi family also emerges

from the fact that the former Prime Minister Smt. Indira Gandhi depended upon Shri Anand for confidential advise with regards to her personal will.

Advocate Anand has been associated with creative and sports-related activities for the last 20 years. As a Joint Vice-President of the Olympic Association during 1987 to 1992, he fought for the recognition and rights of this body. He has successfully represented the Olympic Association’s legal interests from time to time. He currently serves as the President of the Jharkhand Olympic Association. He has always encouraged, and if possible, participated in the activities related to art, culture and society. Shri Anand has been involved in giving voice to social issues, not just through his legal practice, but also through encouraging public participation and seminars, where possible. He strongly believes that today’s youth are India’s real future and truly deserve opportunities which will allow them to succeed not just in the national, but global arena.

Advocate Anand is a resident of South Delhi, one of the best-known and well-reputed constituencies of India. Consequently, he is well versed with the problems and day-to-day challenges faced by the common man. Both his office and residence are situated within South Delhi. He shares a deep sense of concern at the attitude shown by the standing candidate from the constituency, including

the complete lack of concern that the existing candidate has demonstrated towards the welfare of South Delhi. It is an irony – a painful one for voters that while the elected candidate has all the time in the world to routinely appear on television, he is hardly or never seen or met by people of his constituency. An irresponsible trait, which he plans to change. Shri Anand accepts his nomination with a great deal of humility and recognizing the responsibility that comes with the task. South Delhi is not just a jewel in the city of Delhi, but has a special place in the country. Inspite of being a hub for international business and professional excellence, South Delhi is soon becoming a victim of apathy and lack of concern. It has its unique set of problems relating to future economic development, roads, availability of power, drinking water, public transport, traffic, crime, health, education, employment and especially, safety for women and the senior citizens. These problems sound routine, but need attention in the context of a metro and its great people. South Delhi has high expectations of its candidates to ensure that the constituency plays its rightful role in the development of the city as a world-class, cosmopolitan business and cultural hub. Shri Anand is up to the task. His educational qualifications, future vision and experience are tremendous assets in understanding the aspirations and problems of the people of SD. Equally, for finding solutions by representing their voice at the highest levels in the government and courts. He is also committed to using every available asset in bringing such problems to the fore by a process of continuous interaction with the people on a regular basis.

Since the Independence movement, Congress has been focused on ensuring the welfare of the common man. figures and raising personality issues in an attempt to distract the voter from the real problems that deserve the attention of political parties.
